Is there a charge for meals served at the centers?

No. Meals and snacks are provided free of charge.

What will my child eat at preschool or an infant/toddler center?

Every child in a part-day or full-day center is provided 1/2 to 2/3 of their daily nutritional needs, depending upon the length of the program day. On-site Cooks provide wholesome meals that meet the requirements for the USDA Child Care Food Program. Menus provide a variety of foods, both familiar and different from the children’s experience. Fresh fruits and vegetables are served as much as possible and whole grain flour is incorporated into many center recipes.

Are children that have food allergies or other special
dietary requirements accommodated?

Yes. If a child requires a special diet, staff will consult with parent and child’s medical provider to make a plan for a modified menu.

When is my child too sick to attend?

Most children with mild illnesses can safely attend preschool or an infant/toddler center. However, a child may to be too sick to attend if he or she does not feel well enough to comfortably participate in the program’s activities. Because infections spread easily among children, there are some symptoms that require you to keep your child home. The Parent Handbook provides specific information regarding symptoms and conditions that require exclusion of a child.

What health screenings are performed at the preschool and
infant/toddler centers?

With parental consent, trained staff may perform hearing, vision, speech, developmental, behavioral, height/weight and blood pressure screenings on children. The Calaveras Children’s Dental Project visits the centers two times each year to provide dental screenings and preventive treatment.

Will the Resource Connection be able to help me find a
doctor and dentist for my child?

Yes. If your child does not have a source of regular medical and/or dental care, your family will receive a resource packet and information on local providers. Family Advocates and Home Visitors may also assist families in completing health insurance applications if needed.
